It was another grim week for economic numbers. November Existing Home sales fell 8.6% from October’s low levels while New Home Sales of 407,000 units annualized reached their lowest levels in almost 2 decades. Initial Jobless Claims surged to a 26-year high at 586,000; Durable Goods orders declined 1.0% and Personal Income fell 0.2%.

Wall Street wavered in early trading Monday, Dec.29th, as crude prices rose on concerns that Israel’s attack on Gaza might disrupt oil production and shipments from the Middle East.

Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc’s (Other OTC: LEHMQ.PK) emergency bankruptcy filing wiped out as much as $75 billion of potential value for creditors.

Treasury Department said on Monday that it will provide $5 billion to GMAC Financial Services LLC, the ailing financing arm of General Motors Corp., from the $700 billion bank rescue program.

The government will receive preferred shares that pay an 8 percent dividend and warrants to purchase additional shares in return for the money, the department said.
Treasury also said it will lend up to $1 billion to General Motors so that the company can purchase additional equity that GMAC is planning to offer as part of its effort to raise more capital.
